Ski Trip Packing List & Reasons to Hit The Slopes

It’s been far too long since my last big ski holiday but I’ve never stopped reminiscing about that amazing trip (and my favourite) to Levi, Finland. While I’ve been skiing since then, as I ended up living in Finland for a short while (which had its perks), my last true ski vacation was a week-long escape filled with snowy slopes, cosy evenings, and everything I love about the mountains.

Why the Mountains Are Calling

1. It’s a Vacation You’ll Want to Get Fit For

Skiing is one of the few holidays that makes you feel like you’ve truly earned your après-ski indulgences. The best way to prepare is to strengthen your legs, core, and arms beforehand. Even a quick session with squats, planks, and light cardio can help you handle those long days on the slopes. 

Lot’s of gyms will offer ski fitness classes during the season but I’ve also shared plenty of exercises you can use to prep for your ski trip in the comfort of your own home. 

2. Sunshine and Snow

I’m not the biggest fan of cold weather, but those cold and sunny days will never not have my heart. Skiing is the perfect combination of snowy days with burst of sunshine, especially if you choose the right resort of time of year. I’ve come back with tan lines from skiing in Les Deux Alpes. 

That first trip to France was a dream, with sunny breaks at the top of the mountain where a base layer and a gilet were all I needed. On the flip side, my Finland trip saw temperatures dip to -40°C! But you know what they say, no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. 

3. The Après-Ski Life

All I remember is afternoon tea with a fresh baked caked, 3 course dinners, and if we could stay up long enough, trips down to the pub to hang out with new friends made each day.

Nothing beats an outdoor hot tub soak – while it’s snowing – after hours of skiing too. Warming up in your ski clothes with a granola bar and a hot drink..?! Just, yum.

Typically, resorts will also offer loads of other activities like snowshoeing, husky rides, and even Northern Lights tours to make your trip even more magical. 

Not gonna lie though, I find it hard to keep my eyes open too late into the night and will always opt for my full 8 hours of sleep before hitting the slopes again the next day. 

4. Curating Your Wardrobe is Half the Fun

I love an excuse to do a bit of shopping and choosing your style for the slopes is even more fun. I love matching base layers in merino wool and moisture-wicking long-sleeve tops that keep you stylish and warm all topped off with bright outer layers. 

Highly recommend shopping before your trip as stores in the resorts can be pretty pricey. My go to shops for ski wear have been Sweaty BettyTopShop (via ASOS) and adidas. Some places even offer rentals which is a great option especially for first timers. 

5. Easy Access to Slopes Across Europe

Although “budget” isn’t so budget these days, it’s still super easy to get to the top ski resorts from the UK. There are plenty of budget airlines to choose from and fast airport transfers.

You could be in Austria’s acres of skiable terrain or a cosy chalet in France; there’s literally a destination and budget to suit everyone.

What to Pack for Your Ski Trip

Packing for a ski trip can be overwhelming, especially if it’s been a while since your last trip. 

Here’s a printable ski vacation packing list to get you started and keep you sorted:

Ski Gear Essentials

  • Base layers (merino wool or synthetic fabrics)
  • Mid layers: extra socks, long sleeved sweatshirts
  • Outer layers: waterproof ski jacket and salopettes / snow pants
  • Ski socks, and a ski bag
  • Gloves and mittens 
  • Sunscreen
  • Goggles and / or sunglasses 
  • Neck gaiter / buff and hand warmers for colder mountain ranges
  • TO HIRE: helmet, ski boots, skis, poles 

Clothes for Off the Slopes

  • Warm hat, winter gloves and scarf
  • Puffy jacket or fleece jacket for the evenings
  • Snow boots 
  • Pajamas
  • Underwear
  • Flipflops
  • House slippers
  • Comfy clothes like long-sleeve tops and cotton socks
  • Bathing suit for the hot tub or pool
  • Casual outfits (Casual tops, jeans, sweaters/jumpers) 

Don’t forget all your toiletries and the usual miscellaneous items i.e passport etc.

Packing Tips For Your Ski Trip

To keep everything organised, use packing cubes and bring a trash bag for wet clothes or equipment. Pack granola bars and a reusable water bottle for the slopes to stay energised and hydrated. 

Don’t forget small essentials like lip balm, a first aid kit, and your credit card for lift tickets or equipment rentals. These little extras can make all the difference for a smooth ski trip experience.
